At most universities, converting CGPA to a percentage is a single multiplication. Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) works differently. It uses a slab-based equivalence: your CGPA first falls into a grade band, and each band has its own equation.
This matters during placement season in Pune. Many company portals and MBA forms ask for a percentage, and a wrong number can cause problems at document verification. This guide lists the slabs, works through examples, and gives a lookup table so you can check your own figure without any special calculator.
Where the SPPU formula comes from
SPPU's Board of Examinations and Evaluation published the equivalence of CGPA to percentage in a circular (widely referred to as Circular No. 332 of 2020, titled "Equivalence of CGPA into Percentage of Marks"). It is used for programmes under SPPU's credit-based grading system, most commonly B.E./B.Tech under the 2015 and 2019 patterns.
The equivalence is also usually printed on the reverse of the final-year grade card. That printed version is your final authority. If anything in this article differs from what is on your grade card or the latest university circular, follow the university.
The SPPU slab equations
In each equation, x is your final CGPA. The bands do not overlap: a CGPA of exactly 8.25 belongs to the A+ band, not the A band.

Two corrections to versions you may see online:
- The top band is 20x − 100, not 20x − 101. A CGPA of 10 converts to 100%, and 9.50 converts to 90%.
- Some websites list a different constant for the 4.75–5.74 band (for example 10x − 10). The 10x − 2.5 version matches the bands on either side: it gives 45% at 4.75 and 55% at 5.75, the same values the neighbouring equations give. If your CGPA is in this band, check your grade card before using the number.
Worked examples
CGPA 9.80 (O band): 20 × 9.80 − 100 = 196 − 100 = 96.00%
CGPA 9.00 (A+ band): 12 × 9.00 − 25 = 108 − 25 = 83.00%
CGPA 7.50 (A band): 10 × 7.50 − 7.5 = 75 − 7.5 = 67.50%
CGPA 6.00 (B+ band): 5 × 6.00 + 26.25 = 30 + 26.25 = 56.25%
CGPA 5.00 (B/C band): 10 × 5.00 − 2.5 = 50 − 2.5 = 47.50%
CGPA 4.50 (D band): 6.6 × 4.50 + 13.6 = 29.7 + 13.6 = 43.30%
Step by step for your own CGPA
- Take your final CGPA from the grade card. Use it exactly as printed, with two decimals, and do not round it first.
- Find the band it falls into using the table above.
- Apply only that band's equation.
- Round the result to two decimal places, and write it the same way on every form.

Look at the 8.24 and 8.25 rows. Under the published equations, 8.24 gives 74.90% but 8.25 gives 74.00%. The jump is a quirk of the equations, not a mistake in your maths. Use the result your band's equation gives, and keep the circular or grade card ready in case HR asks.
Common SPPU cut-off checks
Mass recruiters often ask for "60% or above throughout". Under SPPU's equivalence:
- A final CGPA of 6.75 converts to exactly 60.00%.
- A CGPA of 6.74 is in the B+ band and converts to 59.95%. If a company is strict about 60%, check whether it also accepts a CGPA cut-off such as "6.5 CGPA or 60%". Many forms list both.
- For a 55% requirement, you need a CGPA of at least 5.75.

What to keep ready for placements
- Final grade card, including the reverse side with the equivalence note.
- All semester grade cards, since some portals ask for semester-wise SGPA.
- A conversion or percentage certificate from the university or your college exam cell, if available. It ends any argument about the number.
- The same figure everywhere. Your resume, LinkedIn and every application should show an identical converted percentage.
FAQ
Does an 8.0 CGPA in SPPU mean 80%?
No. 8.0 falls in the A band (6.75–8.24). Using 10x − 7.5, it converts to 72.5%. Writing 80% on a form would not match your grade card.
Is this formula valid for SPPU B.Com, B.Sc and Arts students?
The slab equivalence is most widely used for engineering, but SPPU's credit-based programmes in other faculties may follow different rules depending on the pattern and year. Check the reverse of your own grade card or ask your college exam section.
My final grade card shows only SGPA. How do I get my CGPA?
CGPA is the credit-weighted average of all semesters: multiply each semester's SGPA by that semester's total credits, add the results, and divide by the total credits of all semesters. A simple average of SGPAs is only correct when every semester has the same credits. If your final grade card does not show a CGPA, ask the exam section, because the official CGPA is the one that counts.
