Getting your first job after college in India can feel intense. So many students apply at once that recruiters sift through huge piles of profiles. Most of the time, a recruiter looks at your resume for only a few seconds. If it does not click, it gets rejected fast.
A lot of freshers miss interviews even though they can do the work. Their resume has simple issues that are easy to fix.
If you have sent applications and heard little or nothing, check your resume. You may be stuck on one or more common problems. Below is a list of common resume mistakes made by Indian freshers, plus quick ways to fix them.
Formatting and Layout
1. Choosing a flashy design
Bright designs and complex layouts can confuse ATS tools. Use a plain one column layout with clear text. A simple look helps both systems and people.
2. Using too small text
If you try to fit everything with an 8 point font, nobody can read it. Keep a clean font like Arial or Calibri. Use around 10 to 12 point size.
3. Mixing styles across sections
Dates and headings should follow one pattern. Do not switch between forms like “Aug 2024 - Present” and “08/2023 to 05/2024.” One style looks neat and steady.
4. Writing a resume that is too long
As a fresher, do not aim for two pages. You likely do not have enough work history to justify extra space. Keep it to one page.
5. Adding a photo
Do not add a picture unless the role asks for it. For most corporate jobs in India, photos take up space and can lead to ATS parsing issues.
Is your resume causing problems? Do not sit and wait for a rejection. Let a tool handle the boring checks. Use JobYaar’s Resume Checker at /resume-checker. It can spot ATS layout issues fast and help you correct them.
Experience and project issues
11. Skipping college work
No internship yet. That does not mean you have nothing to show. Add your college projects like real work. Mention the tech you used and what you personally did.
12. Writing tasks, not outcomes
Do not write: “Was responsible for managing the college fest website.” Write instead: “Built a college fest website using React, handling 5,000+ registrations with no downtime.”
13. Claiming skills you cannot explain
Listing “Machine Learning” after a two hour video can fail in an interview. Only include skills you can back up with details.
14. Leaving out links
If you build things, add your GitHub link. If you design, add your Behance link. Real proof beats a generic line on a resume.
15. Using passive sentences
Each bullet should begin with a clear action word. Examples: Developed, Managed, Created, Analyzed. Do not start with “I did” or “Helped with.”
Grammar and basic slip ups
16. Typos and spelling mistakes
One wrong word can cost you the role. It can look careless. Use Grammarly, then ask one more person to read it.
17. Unprofessional email
If you apply from an email like “coolboy.rahul99@gmail.com”, you may get ignored. Pick a clean email name, such as “rahul.sharma@gmail.com”.
18. Wrong file name
If 100 people upload “Resume.pdf”, yours blends in. Rename it to something clear, like Firstname_Lastname_Resume.pdf.
19. Sending a
