There is a familiar loop in the Indian job market: you need experience to get a job, and you need a job to get experience.
If you are a fresh graduate with no internship, no freelance work and an empty "Work Experience" section, a blank template can feel discouraging. But most companies hiring freshers are not expecting corporate experience. They are looking for evidence that you understand the basics, can learn quickly, and can finish what you start.
Your job is to provide that evidence on one page. Here is how.
1. Replace "Experience" with "Projects"
When you don't have work history, projects take that space. For a fresher, this is often the section recruiters read most closely.
Don't just write the project name. Describe it like work: what you built, which tools you used, what your part was, and what it achieved.
Weak:
- Library Management System (Java, MySQL)
Better:
- Library Management System | Academic Project | Java, MySQL, Swing
- Built a desktop application to manage book issue, return and stock records for the college library.
- Wrote the fine-calculation logic, replacing manual calculation by library staff.
- Designed a search screen that finds books by title, author or ISBN.
If it was a group project, describe your own contribution honestly ("Designed the database schema and wrote the issue/return module"). Interviewers will ask.
If your academic projects are thin, build one small project before you start applying. A simple Android app, a REST API with authentication, a dashboard built from a public dataset (Kaggle or data.gov.in), or a clone of a site you use are all reasonable. Put the code on GitHub with a short README, and link it.
2. Show Coursework That Matches the Role
Your degree already includes subjects that employers care about. A short "Relevant Coursework" line shows the recruiter you have studied what the role needs, which is especially useful when your projects don't cover everything.
Pick 4 to 6 subjects that match the job description, not all of them.
- For software roles: Data Structures and Algorithms, Object-Oriented Programming, Database Management Systems, Operating Systems, Computer Networks.
- For data roles: Statistics, Probability, Database Management Systems, Machine Learning, Data Mining.
- For core electrical/electronics roles: Power Systems, Control Systems, Digital Electronics, Microcontrollers.
- For finance or business roles (B.Com/BBA): Financial Accounting, Cost Accounting, Corporate Finance, Taxation, Business Statistics.
Format it as a single line under Education:
"Relevant coursework: Data Structures, DBMS, Operating Systems, Computer Networks, OOP (Java)"
If you scored well in a specific subject that matters for the role, you can mention it ("DBMS - A+ grade"), but don't list grades for every subject.
3. Add Certifications and Skills You Can Prove
Certifications won't replace projects, but they help a fresher resume in two ways: they show initiative, and they add relevant keywords that recruiters search for.
Certifications worth considering
- NPTEL (SWAYAM): Courses from IIT and IISc faculty with a proctored exam. A certificate with a good score (Elite or Elite + Silver/Gold) in a subject like Programming in Java, Data Structures, or Cloud Computing is recognised by many Indian recruiters and colleges.
- Vendor certifications: Entry-level cloud certifications such as AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) or Google Cloud's foundational certificates. Check current exam fees and student discounts before registering.
- Free platform certificates: Courses from platforms such as Coursera (some offer financial aid), freeCodeCamp, Kaggle Learn, or Google's free digital skills courses. These carry less weight on their own but are useful when paired with a project.
- Domain-specific: For finance roles, NISM certifications; for analytics, tools such as Excel, Power BI or Tableau with a sample dashboard.
How to list them
Keep it short and recent-first:

Avoid listing every 30-minute course you finished. Three strong, relevant certifications are better than twelve unrelated ones.
Skills section
Group skills so a recruiter can scan them quickly:

Frameworks/Libraries: Spring Boot, React
Tools: Git, GitHub, Postman, VS Code
Databases: MySQL, MongoDB
Only list what you can talk about in an interview. If you have used something only once, either leave it out or practise it before you apply.
4. Use Clubs, Fests and Hackathons
Did you help run the college tech fest? Take part in Smart India Hackathon? Lead the coding club or NSS unit?
These show skills that coursework doesn't: communication, coordination, handling pressure and working in a team. Many companies, especially for client-facing and service roles, look for exactly this.
How to write it:
- Tech Fest Coordinator, TechnoVerse 2025: Led 15 student volunteers and managed scheduling for a two-day technical event with 500+ participants.
- Smart India Hackathon - Finalist: Worked in a team of six to build a working traffic-flow prototype in 36 hours; built the Flask backend and REST APIs.
- NSS Volunteer: Organised a digital literacy drive for 40+ senior citizens in a nearby village.
Use numbers where you honestly have them: team size, participants, hours, results.

5. Get the Layout Right
When your content is still light, a neat layout matters even more. A messy file gives recruiters an easy reason to move on.
- Keep it to one page.
- Use one simple column and a standard font (Arial, Calibri) at 10-12 pt.
- Bold tool names and key numbers sparingly so they stand out on a quick scan.
- Remove the Declaration, photo, father's name and other biodata-style details.
- Save as a text-based PDF named
Firstname_Lastname_Resume.pdf. - Proofread twice, then ask someone else to read it.
6. Sample One-Page Fresher Resume Outline
Use this order as a starting point for a software or analytics role. Adjust the order if, for example, your certifications are stronger than your projects.

Notice what is not here: an "Objective" line, a Declaration, hobbies like "listening to music", or personal details beyond contact information. Every line supports the target role.
Closing Note
Having no formal job experience is normal for a fresher, and recruiters know it. What they want to see is that you have applied what you studied. Clear project descriptions, relevant coursework, a few solid certifications and genuine activities can fill one page well.
Keep improving the resume as you go: add a new project, update a certification, and tailor the summary for each type of role. Once you land that first internship or job, move it to the top as "Experience" and trim older college activities to make room.
